Requirements to Qualify as a First Mate
Basic Requirements
The basic requirement of a First Mate is to be able to assist the Skipper, understand his or her instructions, and be able to assume command of the boat in the event that the Skipper is disabled.
Attitude
- Maintain a helpful attitude
- Assist Skipper in instruction passengers
- Follow Skipper's instructions
- Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedure
Skills and Knowledge
- Checking and informing Skipper on systems and problems
- Knowledge of channels
- Assist Skipper by locating and lighting buoys at night
- Familiarity with man-overboard procedures
- Knowledge of reefing and instructing passengers to assist in reefing
- Knowledge of essential rules of the road, including right-of-way situations between two sailboats, two powerboats, and a sailboat and a powerboat
- Knowledge of basic boating terminology, including parts of a sailboat, points of sail, and basic sailing commands
- Know the location of fire extinguishers on Bright Star, their proper use, and how to extinguish diesel, electrical, grease, and solid fuel (wood, fiberglass, cloth) fires.
- Know the location and proper use of emergency signaling gear and first aid kit
- Knowledge of bilge systems, bilge pumps, location of seacocks, and routine and emergency bailing systems/methods.
- Familiarity with using the VHF radio
- Knowledge of basic knots including bowline, figure eight, square knot, clove hitch, how to cleat a line, and how to coil a line
- Know how to properly attach and use shore power
- Know how to properly rig the mainsail and jib
- Know how to assist in docking and how to tie up along the dock
- Knowledge of simple piloting, especially the recognition of aids to navigation commonly encountered
- Knowledge of boat clean-up procedures
Practical
- Demonstrate the ability to assist in docking and tying up
- Demonstrate proper rigging of jib and mainsails
- Demonstrate proper use of the head and electrical systems
- Demonstrate ability to check oil, water, and fuel levels, and to fill if necessary
