My father built my first dollhouse from a pattern that my mother found in Redbook magazine. I received it for Christmas when was probably about six years old. It had six rooms and a patio, and many hours of my father's love. A year later he took it back out to the garage to add two more floors, electric lights, and a manually operated elevator. I found the gloriously renovated house under the Christmas tree yet again the ultimate form of regifting!
But my affection for life in miniature pre-dates that first house. Indeed, my parents were merely indulging a pre-existing condition. I still have a few of the many tiny trinkets that I collected when I was very, very young. When I was sixteen and my father had been gone for seven years my birthday present was a dollhouse kit. Being an odd teenager, I delighted in spending evenings carefully assembling the hundreds of pieces of wood. The house was soon assempled but finishing touches eluded it (or me as my interests shifted). Soon my niece and nephews visited and played with it, doing some damage. And then I moved 3000 miles away from it. But all passions find their way back to us, and eventually I shipped the house across country. Still, space in New York apartments was tight, and working on a dollhouse is messy, cluttered business. I made some progress over the next few years with wallpaper and trim. But ultimately, after a third move, the house was so severaly damaged that I bit the bullet and admitted that it was no longer an essential part of my life. This was because, prior to that last move, I had started on a new house: Three Stable Mews. Avengers fans will know that this was John Steed's final London address during the series, the apartment he lived in during the color episodes of his partnerships with Emma Peel and Tara King. Three Stable Mews is particularly special because I started from scratch: no purchased plans, no kit, just my own sketches and measured drawings, sheets of wood, and a saw. And lots of glue, screws, more glue, and in determination. And, of course the project is not yet complete. I owe credit to Ian Duerden, a fellow Avengers fan whose gorgeous renderings of Avengers sets inspired me to go hime one better with three-dimensions. And I have to thank Cal Westray, whose many captured images from the series have provided me with details of decor and construction. |
